Charleston was the first of the Jazz dances to evolve during the first days of the 1900s. Charleston is responsible for giving “flappers” their name, due to the way they flapped their arms while performing this dance.
Like all dances of this era, Charleston has changed over the years but the dance continues to be based on an 8-count pattern.
Charleston can be danced individually or with a partner. Solo-Charleston offers the dancer near infinite possibilities to put their own flare into the dance.
